Distillery partners with winery to create new Canadian whisky
The result: A special edition Lohin McKinnon VQA Wine Barrel Finished Single Malt Whisky.
And yes, it's just in time for Christmas.
"We really wanted to celebrate British Columbia's rich diversity of world-renowned beer, wine and spirits, and what better way than to collaborate on a special edition single malt whisky, with a local world-class partner like Black Sage Vineyard?" said Stuart McKinnon, Central City's head distiller, in a news release.
The whisky is a single-malt made in Vancouver with BC-grown malted barley that's first aged in oak bourbon barrels and then finished in Black Sage Vineyard's VQA Black Sage Pipe barrels. (Pipe is a fortified style of wine made only at the winery, in homage to Portugal's famous Port producers.)
Lohin McKinnon VQA Wine Barrel Finished Single Malt Whisky is smooth, with notes of vanilla, dried fruit (raisins, apricots) and a long, sweet finish. It's in stores in BC and Alberta now, and in Ontario stores in early 2018. About $60.
The name Lohin McKinnon, incidentally, comes from a combination of McKinnon's last name with Central City's brewmaster, Gary Lohin.
